Hughes-Hollingworth House Extension

A commission to extend an existing house in Whyalla using the principles and design stretegies contained in the ecopolis 'EcoCity Whyalla' report to council.

This non-toxic, solar design has been constructed. It is notable for its fundamental simplicity: constructed in Autoclaved Aerated Concrete, the design creates a courtyard by employing a partially separated verandah.

Solar access angles are protected for winter sunshine and the sloping roof vents warm air through a south facing clerestorey of controllable louvres.

features

Drawing showing many of the intended features of dwellings on the EcoCity core site.

The houses eventually designed by Ecopolis did not include photovoltaics because of cost constraints, but they did include the other features. Although none of the 'ecohouse' designs have been built at this stage, the Hughes-Hollingworth extension has been constructed and the design lessons of the house have been carried through to later work.
