Strawbale Courtyard House at Wistow
The house is a large (220 sq.m) courtyard house orientated north-south along its diagonal axis to fit the ridge on which it is situated.
The external walls are 500mm strawbale and rendered with recycled timber windows.
The courtyard walls are fully glazed timber structures. Internal partitions are in studwork.
The courtyard and house orientation provide protection against both hot and cold winds and create a sheltered semi-enclosed space that, with the high levels of insulation provided by straw (and R3+ roof insulation) helps provde comfortable conditions without additional air-conditioning or heating.
